Clean Energy Link – North is a major transmission upgrade to strengthen the network through Perth’s northern suburbs and the Wheatbelt to enable more clean energy to flow between the Mid-West and Perth to support WA’s decarbonisation goals.
The project involves building and upgrading high-capacity transmission lines, terminals and substations along a 354km corridor from the Northern Terminal in Malaga to Three Springs, to significantly increase the network’s transfer capacity. Once completed, this work will allow around 400MW of existing wind and up to 1GW of new renewable generation to be available to customers - providing enough to power 500,000 WA homes.
Clean Energy Link – North is vital to ensure we can:
- continue to deliver clean power supply for our day-to-day life
- meet growing industry and community energy demand, while keeping the network reliable and robust
- support WA’s housing and industry growth and the jobs and economic benefits they will bring now and in the future.
Frequently asked questions
The project is part of the State Government’s transition to a cleaner energy future.
By strengthening the existing network, more of the energy generated from existing wind and solar farms can be used.
This work also paves the way for several renewable generation projects currently in the pipeline to progress, further increasing the flow of clean energy from the Mid West region and onto the electricity network.
For more information visit Energy Policy WA.
The State Government has provided funding for Western Power to scope, plan and construct new transmission infrastructure to strengthen the northern network, leveraging existing network infrastructure, corridors and easements where possible to minimise community impacts.
