Regional Connect: Northampton
Northampton information
The Shire of Northampton is located in the Mid West region, approximately 480km north of the Perth CBD and 50km north of Geraldton. It covers a vast area of some 12,000km² and has a population of around 3,400 residents.
The Shire stretches from the coastal towns of Kalbarri and Horrocks to the inland agricultural areas of Northampton and Binnu.
The Shire of Northampton is powered by feeder GTN 602, which has more than 4,500 connections.
Why was Northampton chosen as a target area?
The feeder lines being upgraded as part of the Regional Connect program were chosen based on a detailed multi-criteria assessment. This analysis incorporated numerous factors, including:
- Customers experiencing a high number of long unplanned outages
- Challenging environmental conditions
- Diverse community needs
- Opportunities to improve the feeder.
Scope of works
The works to feeder GTN 602, as shown on the map below, include:
- Upgrading protection devices
- Network reconfiguration
- Network automation.
These upgrades will reduce the duration of unplanned outages through telemetered devices, enabling easier fault-finding and isolation to restore power more quickly. It is expected these works will be completed in late 2025.
While the network upgrades may seem minor in isolation, they are intended to act as a package that improves the overall feeder reliability and safety.
