Regional Connect: Lancelin
Lancelin information
Lancelin is located on the coast 127km north of the Perth CBD within the Shire of Gingin. The town has a population of around 1,000, although as a tourist hub this can fluctuate.
Lancelin's power is provided by rural long feeder RGN 604. There are approximately 2,500 connections to this feeder.
Why was Lancelin chosen as a target area?
The feeder lines being upgraded as part of the Regional Connect program were chosen based on a detailed multi-criteria assessment. This analysis incorporated numerous factors, including:
- Customers experiencing a high number of long unplanned outages
- Challenging environmental conditions
- Diverse community needs
- Opportunities to improve the feeder.
Scope of works
The Lancelin works, as shown on the map below, included:
- Installation of protection devices and switches to improve fault-finding capability, network flexibility and reliability
- Installation of a new high voltage injection unit (HVIU) to act as a mobile substation for backup generation to the community in the event of an unplanned power outage.
The HVIU involves multiple generators to power a larger area than would normally be possible when using a standard generator. The generators are connected to the existing network, delivering continued power supply during an extended outage to around 1,100 homes and businesses in Lancelin in the event of a fault on the feeder line.
While the network upgrades may seem minor in isolation, they are intended to act as a package that improves the overall feeder reliability and safety.
