Options at a glance
We've explored numerous options to support rapid growth in Baldivis and ensure reliable electricity supply for the future.
Several options were considered, including:
- doing nothing
- upgrading the existing substation at Waikiki
- building a new substation at Baldivis
- using non-network solutions, such as a battery or similar.
After careful analysis, building a new substation at Baldivis is proposed as the most cost-effective and reliable long-term solution to:
- Relieve the existing Waikiki substation capacity constraints.
- Ensure is adequate capacity to meet future demand as more people move into the area.
- Improve the reliability of electricity supply for everyone in Baldivis and nearby suburbs.
The proposed site is Crown Reserve 51405 (Lot 3001), 60 Pike Road, Baldivis.
The chosen option must:
- Provide the best value in the long-term interest of customers
- Meet the power needs of the growing community in Baldivis
- Reduce the demand on the Waikiki substation
- Improve network resilience, connectivity and maintain reliability
- Minimise the number of unplanned outages and their duration
- Align with future transmission network rationalisation plans
- Be deliverable by 2030
The Options Paper is written in technical language because:
- It must provide sufficient detailed evidence and analysis for interested stakeholders to consider the options
- It needs to satisfy regulatory requirements and scrutiny from the Economic Regulation Authority (ERA).
- It needs to demonstrate that all options have been rigorously assessed, and that the proposed solution is justified on technical, economic, and strategic grounds.
However, Western Power recognises the importance of making the key messages accessible to the broader community, which is why clear summaries and consultation materials are also provided. If you would like further information on any aspect of the Options Paper, please contact us.
